School Holidays

Barb and I had a fabulous South Island holiday on the way down to Christchurch for the ULearn conference. Only a couple of aftershocks to let us know that we live in the shaky isles.

Up the Garden Path

It rained mighty heavily last night- woke me up a couple of times but was still surprised at how quickly the river had come up. Yesterday it was all clear and calm and where it was supposed to be.

I quickly got organised and carted floating stuff and firewood up the top in case it kept on coming. It's gone down a little now but high tide is this afternoon.

I stepped out tentatively across the walking path- it has been known to be undermined and swept away- I was surprised at the strength of the current even across the path.
It's got a way to go yet before there's any real problem but the neighbours are in trouble- yet again. They keep perishables and carpet the floor in their downstairs. After seventy years of family ownership of my house we know better!

Newspaper Article

Last Monday I organised Ewan McIntosh to come to Nelson for a teacher professional development day. The press were there and took our photo. You can read the article by clicking here. They cropped me from the digital version. Such is life!

I Have Ants

I thought I had a few ants in the kitchen as we have always had off and on for as long as I can remember. Being winter I thought I would get on to them and get it sorted before it gets to be a plague in summer. I bought a new pack of ant bait and went to be last night. In the morning the ants were having an ant party. When I got home from work today they were just as thick.

Jane Graduates

Donald's Jane posted these photos of her graduation to her Facebook page. Graduating is such a momentous and well earned occasion I thought warranted celebrating here as well.

Congratulations, Jane.

Ukulele Recital

I have just taken up a new hobby- ukulele playing. I bought a ukulele yesterday, came home and fired up You Tube for a few easy tutorials and a really cool ukulele tuning website and I was away.

Just you wait until I really know how to play rather than making it up! The video is of a Skype call to friend, Barb, up in Hamilton who had the privilege of being the first to hear my new found prowess.

Amy in Croatia

Amy is just back from an idyllic looking couple of weeks in Croatia.
A group of them chartered a boat and used it as a base for operations.
Makes our cold, wet weather seem all the more miserable.
Her photos were not at all what I imagined Croatia to be.

Mac's New Unit

Mac has made up his mind to move into the Wood Resthome. He has a lovely sunny room upstairs and we are making plans to help with the transition.
It has a useful ensuite with one of the lipless showers and plenty of handrails and a non-slip floor.
The rooms face north so get plenty of sunlight in the afternoons.
The kitchen looks all nice and clean with a ton of storage space.
This the view north- you can just see the Pheasant Plucker Pub where you can stagger down for a meal or a pint if you like. There are outside car parks downstairs and a lift to get upstairs.
Mac's is the upstairs two rooms you see here- bedroom on the left and lounge and a little sunny balcony to the right.

Mandy's Photos

Mandy came to visit for a few days while Aivars was having a conference in Christchurch. It was so nice to be able to catch up as it had been such a long time since we had been able to do that. She had a rather fabulous camera and shared some of her photos from her week in the South Island. She had some time with Dennis in Christchurch to start with.
Getting the whole family together was a bit of a mission but the photo below shows it can be done.
Jon took Mandy on a road trip to the West Coast as well.

There are more scenic photos on my photo blog if you would like to look.
